As a medical expert, you regularly chair or facilitate meetings of colleagues, peers, medical students, multidisciplinary teams and other interested parties. While the objective of the meetings can vary widely it is usual for the medical expert or consultant to share their experiences and opinions with their audience without being challenged.

Pharmaceutical companies and other organisations often ask medical experts and Key Opinion Leaders to chair and facilitate a different kind of meeting where the chair has a different role.

The meetings may include

  • Advisory boards
  • Webcasts and online discussions
  • CME events
  • Consensus meetings
  • Satellites, symposia or sessions a major conferences
  • Expert panels (eg for regulators or reimbursement bodies)
  • Media briefings

In these situations it is important for medical experts to be able to merge their own opinions and experiences with those of their peers from hospitals and academic institutes in different geographical and cultural environments. You need to consider all relevant issues, advance the thinking of the group and provide a stimulating and engaging exchange for the participants. You also need to ensure that everybody knows what is expected of them afterwards. Then you can ensure the meeting meets all its objectives, including the sponsor’s.

These events are often high profile and are opportunities to increase your recognition among international peers. Effective chairing and facilitating skills are a pre-requisite for national and international leaders in medicine.

LionsDen courses in chairing and facilitation can help maximise everyone’s meeting needs.
